Shopify SEO Guide
SEO (search engine optimization) for Shopify online store is usually not the first thing that new Shopify owners think of, but it's very important and you have to be very serious about it. On average 40% of visits on your website go from search engines. There are tons of SEO techniques for Shopify stores, let's take a look into the most important ones.
Submit your sitemap to Google Search Console
The primary purpose of XML sitemap is to inform search engines about pages on your sites that are available for crawling. When you create new pages in Shopify the system adds them automatically into the sitemap, so you don't have to worry about it.
How to submit a sitemap to Google?
1. Sign in Google Webmaster system;
2. Add your website as a property;
3. Click on sitemaps -> Add a new sitemap;
4. Add your sitemap URL. You can easily access it by adding '/sitemap.xml' after your store URL. ex.: https://thewebave.com/sitemap.xml
5. Click on 'Submit'.
The process of indexing of the pages can take a few days or even weeks.
Despite the fact that image recognizing by pixels is progressing so fast, we still need to do some work manually to let search engine systems know what content the images are related to.
The most common thing that everybody knew about image SEO is that you need to reduce the image size as much as possible. Very often that's where the work with image SEO ends. But there is one more thing that you need to know. Each image HTML tag supports image alt attribute. This attribute specifies an alternate text for an image if the image cannot be displayed and also helps the search engine to identify the content of it. It is good practice to include at least one target keyword into this tag attribute.
If your Shopify theme has been developed the right way you can easily add alt attribute with Shopify Theme UI.
Blogging with related content to your industry will definitely improve your SEO quality. For example, if you sell clothes online and will publish a lot of related posts about it, like 'Trend Alert: 5 Top Athleisure Trends in 2020' or 'Guide to Different Fabrics' you will get a lot more chance that your potential customers will find you while they are searching for topics they interested in. I would recommend making a new post at least once a week.
If you want to understand your customers' behavior, Google Analytics is a perfect tool for that. This is a free software developed by Google that shows you all types of analytics data about your website visitors (traffic sources, demographics, behavior flow, etc.). Google Analytics contains valuable data that your business can use to improve SEO performance.
Setting up Google Analytics
1. Google Analytics.
2. Choose the Google account you want to sign in with, or click Add account;
3. Click Sign up.
4. Select Website and fill in the required information.
5. Click Get Tracking ID.
6. Copy the global site tag to your clipboard.
7. Open your Shopify admin. Go to Online store > Preferences.
8. In the Google Analytics section, paste your global site tag.
These SEO tips are easy to achieve and soon you will see the desired results.
